Since 1982, the members of Black Umfolosi have been Zimbabwe’s greatest cultural ambassadors. Inspired by the traditional song and dance of southern Africa, the group performs a capella imbube music, gumboot dance, and Zulu dance with a beauty and enthusiasm that are unrivalled. Black Umfolosi’s natural ability to communicate passion and feeling in its performances has enabled the group to become a favourite with people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures around the world. The group’s name is taken from the Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa, to which their ancestors can be traced.
Black Umfolosi’s shows are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Trademark vocal harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking, and clapping are highlighted during brilliantly choreographed shows. The group’s famous gumboot dances are crowd pleasers, showcasing the traditional styles of southern African mining regions.
