Juan Martín learned the art of flamenco in the land of its origin, Andalucia in southern Spain. Born in the coastal city of Málaga, he began studying guitar at the age of six eventually playing in local fiestas, weddings, and baptisms as he developed his knowledge and skills in the disciplines of the purest traditions of flamenco. At the age of 18 Juan moved to Madrid where he gained wide experience performing with many leading musicians, dancers, and singers.

In his twenties Juan relocated to London and began a distinguished international career as an innovative concert performer, broadcaster, and recording artist. Guitar Player Magazine has recognized him as one of the top three guitarists in the world and he was invited to perform at Pablo Picasso’s 90th birthday celebrations. Juan has performed at major festivals worldwide, including the First World Guitar Congress in the USA, the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Hong Kong Festival, and twice at the Montreux Jazz Festival. He has also performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. The list of musicians he has performed with is a virtual who’s who of the music world and includes such jazz notables as Flora Purim, Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis.

Juan has authored several textbooks on flamenco guitar playing, including the best seller, El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra. His original compositions have been praised for reflecting the historic sense of place, people, and paintings and have been compared to those of the great Spanish composers Tarrega and Turina. His output of instructional books and DVDs and performance DVDs and CDs totals over 40. Currently 20 of these items are available online.

Having performed in over 40 countries around the world, Juan’s commitment to his art remains strong as he tours Western Canada in the fall of 2023. The Bassment is honoured to present an international artist of such status!
