Toronto jazz singer Melissa Lauren has made a smooth transition from veteran swing crooness to contemporary songwriter. Her music is very much a product of her early musical training and her adult musical encounters. It’s a pleasing mix of old school jazz, doo wop, and blues with indie-pop inflections and sounds.
Melissa is a rare performer – one as comfortable in jazz as in pop, as well as the space where the two genres converge. Whether covering a jazz standard or elevating an original, Lauren never fails to locate a song’s emotional core. In her latest album, My Voice Lauren explores the ways that we communicate with each other, or don’t, via 11 songs perfectly reflecting the times. The album builds on Lauren’s extensive career both as a solo artist and collaborator with a diverse range of performers, from her time with the Toronto All-Star Big Band while still a teenager to her recent with work Montreal electronic producer Hibernate. Gifted with an appealing voice and an engaging performance style, Lauren has charmed audiences across North America and around the world.
